😱 Max is conducting a self-experiment in the Metaverse: He's isolating himself for three days and living in the #Metaverse. He communicates exclusively virtually via VR glasses in 3D worlds from Facebook and Microsoft. Using his meta avatar, he meets other people, goes to a bar, and exercises. How is he doing? And who is already living like this today?

👨🏼‍💻 During his research in virtual reality, Max meets people with very different motivations for spending a lot of time in apps like to spend time in AltspaceVR or VRChat. For Amy, it's great to finally be able to work out at home without judgmental stares – instead of at the gym. TV host Steve appreciates the anonymity and the ability to customize his avatar however he wants.

➡ We address one of Meta's answers in the film. Here's what they told us:

❔ Question: Has Meta conducted research and/or experiments on the health (physical and mental) risks associated with the prolonged use of VR headsets and communication within the Metaverse? If so: Does using VR worlds/the Metaverse have an impact on mental health?

Answer: The fundamental idea is not for the virtual world to replace the real one. The time we spend online should be used meaningfully – whether for work or personal purposes. Research in this area is ongoing and will play a key role. Just as we aren't building the Metaverse alone, research into its effects and consequences must rightly be conducted by a variety of experts and the companies themselves. We therefore launched the XR Programs and Research Fund, a two-year, $50 million investment in programs and external research to support these efforts. Through this fund, we will collaborate with partners in industry, civil rights groups, governments, non-profit organizations, and academic institutions to foster independent external research around the world.

❔ Q: What is Meta's strategy for preventing cyberbullying on its VR platforms?

A: (...) Our blog post "Building the Metaverse Responsibly" outlines how we plan to work with policymakers, experts, and industry partners to bring the metaverse to life. (...) We further explained what we are doing to ensure people's safety when using VR technologies in this blog post: "Keeping People Safe in VR and Beyond." We want everyone to feel in control of their VR experience and safe on our platform.

Several tools already exist to help keep people safe in VR. Currently, you can report and block people on the Quest platform. Additionally, users can be blocked at the platform level. Abusive behavior or content, whether within a game, app, or outside of the headset, can also be reported via our web tool.
