How to blur moving objects in Adobe® Premiere® Pro using Gaussian Blur Effect // Real life example
Here is an outline of the steps used in this tutorial to show how to blur a moving object:
1. Search for “Gaussian Blur” in the Effects tab (Project panel)
2. Drag the effect onto the clip where you want the blur to appear in the timeline
3. Navigate to the Effect Controls tab (Gaussian Blur will appear as a layer)
4. Select blur shape (oval, rectangle or draw a custom shape with the pen tool)
5. Drill down the Gaussian Blur layer to adjust Blurriness and Mask Feather values to desired levels
6. Select the Toggle Animation icon to the left of Mask Path (will add an initial keyframe)
7. Method 1 (auto): Select the Track select mask forward play icon to the right of Mask Path (proceed to manual Method 2 if you have difficulty with Method 1 as I did)
8. Method 2 (manual): Navigate to first keyframe created
8a. Step 1 Position Playhead: manually forward (arrow right) the Playhead until you need to reposition the Mask Blur in the video
8b. Step 2 Add Keyframe: Select keyframe icon to add a new keyframe (will appear in the timeline control on the right of Mask Path)
8c. Step 3 Adjust Mask: Make sure Mask layer is selected (under Gaussian Blur) and adjust the mask blur position in the Program panel
8d. Repeat above Steps 1-3 until you have reached the end of your clip
8e. Review animation to determine if additional keyframes and adjustments are needed in order to blur the desired area as it moves
Note: During the keyframe process, the clip segment in the timeline is selected. Use the keyframe arrows to advance between keyframes.
Best practice tip: lock timeline layers to isolate your working layer.
