Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have a long and rich history, dating back to prehistoric times. Early humans used maps to represent their surroundings and navigate the world. Roger Tomlinson is credited with creating the first true GIS in 1960, the Canadian Geographic Information System (CGIS).
