This video is part 4 in a series demonstrating how to make a flexible binding with a tight-back in full #leather, which was common in England in the 17th and 18th centuries. This video will cover preparing the boards prior to attachment. It took up more video time than expected. The next video will cover board attachment and some preparation for covering in leather.

A good book for more information about binding from this period is A History of English Craft Bookbinding Technique by Bernard Middleton

This structure is well described by Arthur Johnson in The Thames and Hudson Manual of Book Binding

Another good reference for this structure is Bookbinding A Manual for those Interested in the Craft of Bookbinding by William F. Matthews, 1929

The tools and materials I use can be purchased from specialist suppliers and manufacturers in my suppliers list. If you are in Australia I have a limited range of items I supply by mail or by pickup from the bindery in Brisbane.
