Exodus 19:1-2, 9-11, 16-20b
It was in the third month after the Israelites left Egypt; on that day they arrived in the Desert of Sinai. They set out from Rephidim, and when they arrived in the Desert of Sinai, they camped in the desert. Israel camped there opposite the mountain. The LORD said to Moses, "Behold, I come to you in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and they may believe in you forever." Moses then told the LORD the words of the people.
The LORD said to Moses, "Go to the people and tell them to prepare for the feast today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes and be ready for the third day, for on the third day the LORD will descend upon Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people."
On the third morning, there were peals of thunder and lightning, a thick cloud over the mountain, and a loud trumpet blast, so that all the people in the camp trembled with fear. Moses led the people out of the camp to meet God and stood at the foot of the mountain. Now Mount Sinai was completely wrapped in smoke, because the LORD had descended upon it in fire; the smoke from it ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked violently. The trumpet blast continued and grew louder. Moses spoke, and God answered him in the midst of thunder.
The Lord descended upon Mount Sinai, to its summit. And he called Moses to the summit of the mountain.
Matthew 13:10-17
The disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Why do you speak to them in parables?"
He answered them, "To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. For whoever has, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken away. Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. Thus, the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled in them:
"You will hear, but you will not understand; you will see, but you will not perceive. For this people's heart has become hardened, and their ears have grown dull, and they have closed their eyes; so that they may not see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn, and I will heal them."
But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. For truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous men have desired to see what you see, but have not seen it; and to hear what you hear, but have not heard it."
