In this video, we show you how to create a colour-diverging custom legend for maps in Power BI.

Want a true colour-diverging legend on a Power BI map (to show scales or negative, neutral, positive)? Unfortunately, Power BI doesn’t give you one an out of the box - so what do you do? In this tutorial, we'll walk you through a simple, reliable workaround to build a custom diverging map legend using bins + a legend table + conditional formatting.

You’ll learn how to:

Bin your measure into clean breakpoints (so your colours are consistent)
Build a legend table that lives inside your report (and updates cleanly)
Apply conditional formatting to create a smooth diverging colour ramp
Use the result as a custom map legend that looks polished and stakeholder-ready

If you’re building choropleth maps, performance dashboards, or anything that needs a clear “below vs above” story, this is one of those techniques you’ll use again and again.

Works great for: variance maps, YoY change, budget vs actual, profit/loss, regional performance, and more.

Hope you enjoy this video and we'll see you in the next one!
