Tor-Baalos, the Lord of Destruction, better known as Baal, is one of the main villains of Diablo II. Baal is a demon, one of the three Prime Evils, and has two brothers: Mephisto, the elder, and Diablo, the younger.
When the great embodiments of light and darkness—Anu and Tathamet—fell in their great battle, Tathamet's body became the basis for the Burning Hells, and from the monster's seven heads emerged the seven supreme demons. From the three main heads emerged Mephisto, Baal, and Diablo.
According to the annals of the Horadrim, during the eternal struggle for supreme power in Hell, the lesser demons Azmodan and Belial conspired against the great three Prime Evils, intending to overthrow them and banish them to the mortal realm. Their plan succeeded: the trio was unable to hold back the onslaught of all of Hell for long and, eventually, weakened and incorporeal, were banished to the world of the Sanctuary. In the mortal realm, the three brothers—Baal, Mephistopheles, and Diablo—were confronted by a secret order dedicated to combating the Dark Forces: the Horadrim. They imprisoned the three Prime Evils in special magical crystals—Soulstones—which were hidden in various parts of the Sanctuary world.
After Baal and his brothers were cast down from the infernal throne and banished to earth in disembodied form, the secret order of the Horadrim, alerted by the Angels to the arrival of the Three Evils, began an urgent search for the demons. While in the mortal world, the Prime Evils had lost some of their power and therefore needed to constantly replenish themselves with mortal energy.
Splitting up, the Brothers traveled to different parts of the Sanctuary to gain strength. Baal, wreaking havoc in the eastern cities of the world, in the Desert, was making his way closer and closer to the ancient city of Luth Gholein. Near the city itself, Baal was overtaken by Horadrim mages. The leader of the group, Tal Rasha, managed to seal the Lord of Destruction within the Soulstone. However, the stone was damaged, so fearing that the demon would escape its confinement, Tal Rasha placed the Soul Stone within himself, hoping that his will would be enough to suppress Baal's power. Tal Rasha was buried alive in one of the seven tombs, chained with special chains to a pillar in the center of the tomb. The location of the tomb itself was carefully concealed.
Some time later, Baal possesses Tal Rasha's body, but is still unable to free himself from his confinement.
Many years later, Baal's tomb is sought by his younger brother, the Lord of Terror Diablo. The Archangel Tyrael appears. But the demons overcome the archangel and, leaving one of the punished Lesser Evils, Duriel, in the tomb, they set out to find their older brother. As a result, Tyrael himself ends up locked in the tomb, from where he is soon rescued by the game's protagonist. After Mephisto was found, Baal traveled north through a portal to Harrogath, home to the barbarians. According to the game's plot, while the hero battles Diablo, the Lord of Destruction subjugates the barbarians and makes his way to the sacred Worldstone deep within Mount Arreat, which serves as the final barrier preventing the demon army from entering this world.
While Baal makes his way into the Worldstone's vault, the hero destroys the demon's minions, overtaking the Prime Evil. Baal meets the hero in the hall before the portal to the Worldstone's chamber, where Baal's minions are defeated. The final battle takes place in the Worldstone's cave, where the Lord of Destruction attempts to destroy the game's hero. But the last bastion of Evil is defeated, and his soul is sent back to Hell. However, the time Baal spent in the Worldstone's chamber was enough to corrupt the Stone. The Archangel Tyrael subsequently destroys the Stone.
