I used to hate singing at family events… Until I realized these things ⬇️
My family always asks me to sing whenever there’s a chance so of course when my brother got married, and there was this piano player at the reception dinner, my family asked me to sing.
“Just one or two songs” they said (that quickly became 30 minutes of singing 😂).
A couple years ago I would have said, “no… please don’t make me… I have nothing prepared… I’m not warmed up…”
But this time it didn’t bother me at all.
Why? Because I knew that me getting up there and singing is not about me and it’s not about singing perfectly.
It is about sharing joy and doing something for the people you love.
Who cares that I wasn’t warmed up (besides my own voice haha!)?
Were there some wrong notes and wrong lyrics?
100%!! Did anyone care?
Not a soul. Most people didn’t even notice!!! 🤷🏼♀️
So how did I go from fighting my family and not wanting to sing to not giving it a second thought and just get up and sing?
As singers we sometimes forget that the average person who we’re singing for is not trained in music… they can’t hear the things we do.
We also sometimes forget that no one is expecting you to deliver a perfect performance… especially in cases like this where every one knows you didn’t prepare anything.
And lastly we sometimes forget that most people wish they had the courage to get up and sing in front of anyone and that they are in awe and admire us just for the sheer courage to get up and sing.
I’m not saying that this is easy…
But remind yourself of how much you love to sing and with practice getting up in front of people - whether that’s your family or complete strangers - will get easier and easier.
And who knows, you might even enjoy yourself 😉

PS: The first time is always the hardest… But once you sing in front of someone you can see how it’s not nearly is scary as you thought it was.
Let that first time (or next time) be in a safe space with a vocal coach. We can help guide you so that you can get to a point where you enjoy performing and singing for others.
