Android 14 Improves Lock Screen Security with Enhanced PIN Privacy Toggle & Removal of the OK Button

There's been a trend of thieves watching you unlock your smartphone before snatching it and running away. Since Android and iOS devices can be useless to them if they can't steal your data or reset things so it can be resold.

One way they can do this is by watching the animation that is displayed on the screen when you enter your PIN or swipe through your pattern.
But thankfully with the launch of Android 14 Google has added an Enhanced PIN Privacy feature that can help you from those Shoulder Surfer thieves.
To find this feature, we first need to have a PIN setup on our device.
Then we can open up the Settings application.
Select hthe Security & Privacy option.
And then tap on Device Unlock.
From here, we should see that we do have a PIN setup for the lock screen and we can tap the gear icon next to it here.
By default, the Enhanced PIN Privacy option is going to be disabled but we can turn this feature on with a simple tap.
So let's see how this feature works before enabling it. . .
And now we can see how it removes the animations while we enter in our PIN number.
Another nice change with the update to Android 14 is that we no longer have to press OK after we enter our PIN number.
You can see that after I type in my PIN, the Google Pixel 7 Pro here just instantly unlocks.
Now, this new change will NOT work unless you have a 6 digits PIN number setup on your smartphone or tablet.
So if you don't like how this instant unlock change works, then set it to 4 or 5 digits and you'll still have to confirm before the phone will be unlocked.
However, this can be easily disabled from the same options menu even if your PIN is set to 6 digits.
I also wanted to point out that those who have their lock screen set to a Pattern also have the ability to disable the animations.
It works the same way, just have your lock screen set up correctly and then tap the Gear icon right here.
Just like with the Enhanced PIN Privacy option, we have one for the Pattern as well.
This way the screen won't display an animation when we go to unlock the device.
These are small but much welcomed changes coming with Android 14 that can be tested right now with the Beta 4 release.
Google is likely going to release one or two more beta updates before finalizing everything for the stable launch in the coming months.
