An essential tool in a Virtual Production and VFX pipeline is the ability to output AOVs or render passes for use in compositing. Having these available gives you or the compositing artist a lot more flexibility and power to lift your shots to the next level! In this tutorial we go step by step through the process of rendering AOVs in Unity Recorder, bringing them into Foundrys Nuke and using the render passes to set up effects like depth of field (DOF).
What is covered :
Setting up Recorder to output AOVs
Tips for more efficient output setup in Recorder
Importing AOVs into Nuke
Quick overview of the use cases for some AOVs (spec, normal, zdepth, motion vectors, diffuse lighting, alpha, refraction)
Using the spec lighting AOV to adjust the specularity of our beauty render
Using the alpha AOV to grade the background separately
Using the zDepth AOV to set up DOF (depth blur) with Nukes zDefocus
Troubleshooting a render issue specific to the AOV recorder
And if you don't care about any of that, at least Mordin Solus famous Mass Effect guy extraordinaire is in there. Thats gotta count for something?
