For me, it remains one of the key events in our history, perhaps even more so today than ever before: the popular uprising of June 17th, the 70th anniversary of which we commemorate today. Over a million people took to the streets then to protest the SED's Stalinist policies, the ever-increasing exploitation of the people, and the suppression of freedom of expression. And had the Soviets not intervened, a second attempt in 1989 would have been unnecessary. I bow my head in respect to all the workers, farmers, employees, soldiers, police officers, young people, and so many others who showed such incredible courage back then.
