Metamask is the nr. browser wallet to use when interacting with crypto currency applications. As usual great ease of use comes with some drawbacks: privacy and security are far from optimal.
First of all Metamask is a hot wallet because it's always connected to the internet when you are browsing, this is automatically less safe then a hardware wallet. Try to see it as the wallet you have on you as you would not walk the streets with 10K in cash. This means you only put the money you need for a certain dApp in your Metamask.
If you want to add a layer of security, then link a hardware wallet like a Ledger or Trezor to your Metamask so you have to sign off every transaction and so your keys stay safe on you ledger.
Second: know that scam websites can generate a fake popup so you think it's Metamask. Never ever share your password or your keys and if you are certain you are logged in, don't log in again. Just close the browser and try again. Also: only have 1 tab open when using Metamask and lock Metamask when you are done.
Last but not least we have privacy risks: because Metamask has to interact with dApps, you have to give it permission to see everyting in your browser and because you can copy your address to you clipboard, it needs access to your clipboard as well. These are big "asks". On top of that is the Metamask privacy statement very broad and they could potentially collect a lot of data. That's why I suggest using a different browser, just for Metamask.
