Freedom fighters’ descendants continue to blockade Shahbagh
Beneficiaries of the freedom fighter quota are confining their blockade to the Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka, protesting the government’s decision to scrap the existing quota system for first and second class government jobs reserved for descendants of freedom fighters.
Muktijoddhar Santan Command and Muktijoddhar Paribar – two organizations of the descendants of 1971 freedom fighters – gathered at the Shahbagh intersection on Wednesday night and blocked the whole intersection.
Traffic came to a halt following the initial protest.
They blockaded the intersection hours after the government decided to abolish the quota for top government jobs.
They demanded the reinstatement of the 30% quota privilege for family members of freedom fighters.
The demonstrators also announced they would organize a rally in Shahbagh at 3pm on Saturday.
