Lake Onega, One Of The Largest Freshwater Lakes In Europe, Located In Northwestern Russia. Covering Approximately 9,890 Square Kilometers In Total Surface Area, Lake Onega Is The Second Largest Lake In Europe After Lake Ladoga, And The 18th Largest In The World.
Situated Within The Territory Of The Republic Of Karelia, Leningrad And Vologda Provinces Of Russia , Lake Onega Is The Third Largest Lake In Russia After Lake Baikal, And Lake Ladoga.
Formed As A Result Of Glacial Activity About 12,000 Years Ago During The Last Glaciation Period, Lake Onega Has A Roughly Oval Shape, Stretching From Northwest To Southeast. The Lake's Total Length Is Roughly 240 Kilometers And Its Greatest Width Is 80 Km.
The Lake Has A Average Depth Of 30 Meters And A Maximum Depth Of 132 Meters. The Total Water Volume Of The Lake Is 280 Cubic Kilometers.
More Than Fifty Rivers Flow Into The Lake. The Shuya, The Suna, The Vodla Are The Largest Of These Rivers. The Only Major Outflow From The Lake Is Through The Svir River, Which Flows From Lake Onega To Ladoga, Connecting The Two Largest Lakes Of Europe.
There Are Several Islands Situated Within Lake Onega. There Are About 1650 Islands In The Lake With A Total Area Of About 250 Square Kilometers. The Largest Island Is Bolshoi Klimenetsky, With An Area Of 147 Square Kilometers, Whereas The Most Famous Is Kizhi, Which Contains Historical Wooden Churches From The 15th To 20th Centuries, Other Notable Islands Are Bolshoi Lelikovsky And Suysari.
