For IB teachers, creating impactful and memorable lessons that challenge and engage students can seem like a distant dream as they struggle through hours of lesson planning. However, a simple framework can provide the recipe for stunning IB lesson plans that save time and inspire learning. The CHACER framework focuses lesson planning around Context, Hook, Activity, Clarify, Expand and Review - guiding teachers through a step-by-step process to create lessons that are epic, unforgettable and truly transformative.
Starting any lesson plan with clear Context is key - teachers must understand the syllabus requirements, students' needs and prior knowledge on the topic. This context informs all subsequent lesson decisions around the level of detail needed, activities chosen and how new content builds on prior learning. Without understanding context, lessons risk becoming dull repetitions that confuse and frustrate students. Analyzing context first guides choices that make lessons relevant and captivating for students.
Once context is clear, the next step is a Hook - an engaging opener that captures students' imaginations and makes them want to learn. This could be a short compelling video, animations, real-life examples, demonstrations or simulations related to the topic. The hook primes students' curiosity and introduces them to key concepts in an exciting way that creates excitement for the lesson. Without a powerful hook, students tune out and lose motivation to learn - so crafting the right hook sets the stage for an unforgettable lesson experience.
After priming students' interest, IB teachers should move into an Activity that provides hands-on practice and cement students' understanding. Activities that call for collaboration, physical movement, problem-solving and creative thinking are most effective and memorable. Ideally, the activity should require students to apply their existing knowledge to new situations, fostering higher-order thinking. Without dynamic activities to apply knowledge in real ways, lessons fail to truly transform students - so planning targeted activities from the start creates stunning lessons where students learn by doing.
Once students have had the opportunity to explore new concepts through activities, the next step is to Clarify any misconceptions, address challenges and check for comprehension. This involves directly teaching key facts and concepts, explaining complex ideas in simple terms and answering students' questions. When students grapple with
