Why Did Ancient Humans Paint Scary Monsters Inside Caves?
Thousands of years ago, ancient humans crawled deep into dark caves, lit only by torchlight, and painted on the walls. Some of what they painted was normal animals, hunting scenes. But some of it was deeply strange. Hybrid creatures. Monsters that never existed. Human figures with animal heads. And they did all of this in the deepest, hardest to reach parts of the cave, where almost no one would ever see it. For a long time nobody really knew why. Turns out the answer has nothing to do with decoration, and everything to do with how the human brain works in total darkness.
