A desktop environment (DE) is the term used to describe the graphical user interface (GUI) of Linux distributions.

A desktop environment consists of several things, including:
Icons.
Widgets.
Themes.
Wallpapers.
Window management systems.
& so on & so forth...

There are many DE's for Linux, including but not limited to:
XFCE
LXQT
LXDE
KDE Plasma
MATE
GNOME
Cinnamon
