Why Phantom Lancer rushes Phylactery in 7.40c Dota 2

Why are so many cores heroes rushing Phylactery? Hi, I’m Torte de Lini, In 7.40, the developers tweaked the components to make Phylactery into items that are genuinely more desired. Instead of Phylactery needing a Point Booster, it now needs a Ring of Health and Void Stone. This bumps up the cost of Phylactery by 100 but this change achieves two things:

1. It makes the item vastly easier to obtain because instead of having to save your gold up to 1,200 gold for the Point Booster, you now only need to farm for 700 gold for the Ring of Health. So now when you are farming for the Void Stone, you can at least have some health regeneration to keep you afloat.

and 2. The change means that laning is now vastly more comfortable for heroes who need a secure lane.

So now we’re seeing carry heroes like Spectre, Phantom Lancer or even Riki opt for an early Phylactery to give them the health regeneration to survive better in lane but also mana regeneration to spam their low cooldown abilities like Spirit Lance, Spectral Dagger or Blink Strike that now deal more damage. Phylactery gives these carry heroes a longer laning stage, repelling the enemy Offlaner out of the lane and thus a strong farming rotation between the jungle camps and the safe lane, essentially winning

Heroes like Night Stalker, Tiny and Bounty Hunter are also leaning towards a fast Phylactery and that should be no surprise as these heroes have low cooldown nuke abilities (Void, Toss, Shuriken Toss) and greatly appreciate the health and mana regeneration. Shit, I’ve even seen Axe rush Phylactery first for his new Pure damage-based Battle Hunger ability where he just constantly punishes enemy Supports non-stop without even having to leave the lane. The extra mana regeneration and the slow from Phylactery means I can use it on heavy camps without feeling concerned I’ll run out of mana. The slow debuff also plays well into the Battle Hunger slow for me to close that gap and Berserker’s Call them.

Now the downside with rushing Phylactery is that it is still relatively expensive: 2,600 gold means you could end up delaying your larger items like Radiance for Spectre or Manta Style for Phantom Lancer. It might also not even be necessary if you’re performing especially well in the lane or the enemy just flat-out sucks. It’s up to you to determine if you’re feeling very threatened in lane or your Offlaner is not being threatened enough.

Lastly, does this mean you should upgrade Phylactery to Khanda and the reality is not really. It all depends if you need the break or not. With Axe, for example, when I play vs. Spectre, I get Khanda but much later in the game, after Blade Mail, Blink, Aghs Shard and Black King Bar. There’s no real justification to upgrade it further unless you find it especially appealing or necessary.

And that’s pretty much it! Give it a shot and see how your lanes are feeling when opting for Phylactery. Even heroes like Sniper, I’ve seen people go for Phylactery into Aghs Scepter if they’re farming well in the midlane, as the timing of Phylactery can help secure a lot of kills in the later stages of the early-game.
