Use headphones only with any virtual surround like Windows Sonic turned off. Best HRTF effects at 0:34, 1:51, 5:14, 6:50, 8:05, 10:33, 12:53, and 17:53.

As someone who has played through the entire Rune Classic campaign, I can confirm that this OpenAL patch works with no problems aside from the subtitles running too fast in two cutscenes. While there is sadly no EAX reverb, the use of 3D positional audio is still just as fantastic as in Unreal Gold. The Dwarf levels in particular have a lush soundscape thanks to all the running water and machinery. The occlusion effect is unfortunately a bit buggy due to how UE1 handles the third-person camera perspective (12:40). It's definitely not as sophisticated as MetaAudio for Half-Life 1.
Note that while Rune Classic does come with its own ALAudio driver, it's completely broken out of the box and must be replaced with the patch above.
