The Star That Ate Its Planet
In March 2025, NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory captured unusual X-ray emissions from the Helix Nebula, around 650 light-years away in the constellation Aquarius. The signals pointed to a catastrophic event: a planet being torn apart and consumed by a white dwarf star named WD 2226-210.
This stellar remnant, once a sun-like star, has become a cosmic predator—devouring the planet that once orbited it. This discovery provides one of the clearest glimpses of planetary destruction ever recorded and offers new insights into the ultimate fate of solar systems after their stars die.
