In this tutorial I want to cover a couple of different ways of doing Celtic Interlock using Illustrator. This can be useful for either doing borders around images, for creating maps, doing masonry, or for any kind tattooing (or something like that). So for the first chapter, I’m going to keep it simple and we’ll just take three colored rings of equal size, arrange them symmetrically, and then with the tricks I’m going to show you using the paint bucket tools we’ll have them interweave as a Celtic Interlock would be.
In chapter 2, we’ll do a more traditional braid design, and we'll use the guides to make it as symmetrical as we can and then use that to create a tiling pattern brush that we can apply to some other splines.

01: 3 Rings
The under/over nature of Celtic interlock seems challenging in Illustrator because you can't have a layer both above and below. I'll show you my approach using the paint bucket tools to create precise interlocking designs. In our first exercise we'll keep it simple to concentrate on our procedure. We make 3 circles in the primary colors in a triangular formation. Then follow along as we fold space and make our rings interlock properly.
02: Braid
In the second chapter we'll create a classic 4 strand braid. First we'll set up some guides to keep our work symmetrical. Then using the pen tool we lay out the basic framework. then after setting up our line-width; we'll use the paint bucket tools on the both fills and strokes. Once we get it trimmed up we define it as a pattern brush. That brush preset can then be applied to a path to create a seamless tiling interlocking braid.
