In today's video, I'm going to teach you how to create a sitemap on WordPress.com. Creating a sitemap is an essential task for optimizing your website for search engines. It helps search engines understand the structure of your site, ensuring that all your pages are indexed correctly. Let's get started with this step-by-step guide.
First, you'll want to open your browser and head over to the WordPress.com login page. If you're not already logged in, do so by entering your credentials. Once you're logged in, you should be greeted by your WordPress dashboard, which is the central hub for managing your website.
Next, navigate to your site by entering "localhost/wordpress/wp-admin" in your browser's address bar. This will take you directly to the admin area of your WordPress site. Once there, we need to dive into a few settings to ensure everything is properly configured for creating your sitemap.
Head over to the "Permalink Settings" page. This is where you can configure how your URLs are structured. Make sure your permalinks are set up in a way that makes the most sense for your site, often using a simple structure like "Post name."
Now, let's install a plugin to help us generate the sitemap. On the left-hand menu, click on "Plugins." Here, you'll see an option to "Add New." Click that, and a search box will appear on the following page. Type "XML" into this search box. You'll be presented with a list of plugins that relate to sitemaps and XML files. Find a reputable plugin, such as "All in One SEO," which is popular and widely used.
Once you've located the plugin, click on "Install Now." This process will only take a few seconds, and once it's completed, the button you'll need to click will change to "Activate." Click "Activate" to ensure the plugin is live and running on your site.
With your plugin activated, it's time to configure your sitemap. Return to the WordPress Dashboard, and in the left-hand menu, you'll notice a new entry named "All in One SEO." Hover over it, and a submenu will appear. Click on "Sitemaps" from the dropdown menu.
This will bring you to the sitemap settings page. Start by clicking on "General Sitemap." Here, you have the opportunity to tweak the settings to fit your specific needs. You can change what post types to include in the sitemap or whether to include certain taxonomies. Feel free to explore these options to best suit your website's structure.
