Ye Olde Mitre Pub is believed to be the oldest pub in London. It was built in 1546 as part of the Bishop of Ely's palace in London. Queen Elizabeth I came here as a young maiden and danced around a cherry tree used as a May Pole. Later the pole became a support post for the pub, and it is still here today. The pub is behind St. Etheldreda's Church. It was built in 1290 but closed much of the time after the Protestant Reformation. The first mass in modern time was held in 1878. It is the oldest Roman Catholic church in London.
