We finally made it to Athens, Greece! So excited to share our first walk starting from Athens Hellenic Parliament through the super busy Syntagma Square before walking the one and a half kilometer-long Ermou Street. This walk connects Kerameikos archaeological site with the Syntagma Square through Monastiraki, Psiri and Thiseio. Explore the shops, cafes and restaurants in the Agora district.

Ermou Street is a mecca for tourists and is very crowded making it perfect for people watching. Enjoy walking along this perfect street as we do some window shopping before circling the Historic Byzantine Panaghia Kapnikarea church.

The Church of Panagia Kapnikarea or just Kapnikarea is a Greek Orthodox church and one of the oldest churches in Athens. It is estimated that the church was built some time in the 11th century, perhaps around 1050. As it was common with the early Christian churches, this was built over an ancient Greek temple dedicated to the worship of a goddess, possibly Athena or Demeter. When King Otto I, King of the Kingdom of Greece, brought the Bavarian architect Leo von Klenze to draw the new city plan of Athens, the church was considered for demolition and it was the King of Bavaria, Ludwig I who objected the decision and saved the church.

We finish our walk on the hillside neighbourhood of Plaka in the shadow of the Acropolis and its ancient temples. Hillside Plaka has a village feel, with narrow cobblestone streets lined with tiny shops selling jewelry, clothes and local ceramics. Sidewalk cafes and family-run tavernas stay open until late, and Cine Paris shows classic movies al fresco. Nearby, the whitewashed homes of the Anafiotika neighbourhood give the small enclave a Greek-island vibe.
