The famous prayer over the cup in the Garden of Gethsemane, as recounted in all four Gospels. This event occurred on Thursday of Holy Week—the last week of Jesus Christ's earthly life before the Crucifixion. In the Church, this day is called Maundy Thursday. It's tomorrow. Another event that, in fact, makes Maundy Thursday Great is the Last Supper, Christ's final earthly meal. He broke bread, gave it to the disciples, and said, "This is my body, which is given for you." Then he gave the cup of wine, saying, "This cup is the New Testament in my blood, which is shed for you." Thus was established the principal Christian sacrament—the Eucharist: the partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ under the species of bread and wine. The main Orthodox service, the Divine Liturgy, is celebrated for the sake of this communion. At every Liturgy, the priest pronounces these Gospel words of Christ in the altar—a symbol of Christ Himself speaking here and now to everyone who has come to the service. This is a fundamental point for understanding the essence of the Divine Liturgy. The celebration of the Sacrament of the Eucharist is not simply a remembrance of events two thousand years ago, but the actual presence of every parishioner at that very Last Supper, which took place on Maundy Thursday. And today—on the eve of that day—we will listen to our interlocutors reflect on its events.
