Microsoft and OpenAI are reportedly engaged in talks to develop a new data center in the U.S. Named Stargate, this facility, which includes an AI supercomputer, is expected to cost upwards of $100 billion, as per reports from The Information.
The construction of the Stargate supercomputer could span five to six years. According to various sources, the cost might exceed three times the amount Microsoft spent last year on infrastructure such as servers, buildings, and other equipment, as reported by The Information. This investment would make the project over 100 times costlier than some of today’s largest data centers. Moreover, the supercomputer’s significant energy demands, possibly reaching several gigawatts, could lead Microsoft and OpenAI to consider unconventional energy sources, including nuclear power.
