The Wolf and the Cat
Leonid Glibov
The Wolf ran into the village from the forest…
Don’t think he’s visiting, brother!
No, the Wolf won’t be visiting;
But he came running to hide somewhere;
The damned people with the dogs caught up with him…
And the Wolf would like to jump into some gate,
But he just,— wherever he looks —
Everywhere the poor little Wolf is messing around,-
Even if he sits down and cries;
The gates, as it were, are all locked around,
And the Wolf really doesn’t want to die
(Because he hasn’t made a living yet, you see!),
And worse than people — from visible death…
When he looks —
On the fence the Cat is sitting,
Purring and dozing in the sun.
The Wolf jumped up and said to the Cat:
— Little brother the Cat! Tell me quickly,
Which of the owners here is the kindest?
I want to ask someone to hide me
At this bad time. I could be useful!.
Do you hear that noise? They're after me!.
Father Cat! Where will they get me?
— Ask Stepan quickly,
He's a good man,— the Cat said to the Wolf.
— Yes, I stole the ram from him.
— Well, then go and visit Demyan.
— Oh, and I'm afraid of Demyan too: As soon as I get back,
He'll remember the piglet.
— Run, while the gene lives Trokhy!
— Trokhy? I'm afraid to meet him:
Since spring he's still angry with the lamb!
— It's bad!. Well... and won't Klym accept it?
— Oh, brother! I brought the calf to him!
— So, I see, you've fed everyone here well, -
The Cat said to the Wolf, -
Why did you run here, brother?
No, our Cossacks are still awake,
To hide the Wolf from trouble!
And you blame yourself anyway:
What you sow, brother, you reap!
