Once the bell is rung, you have two and a half minutes to do whatever the hell you want while waiting for the boat. Putting all that effort into climbing the houses really doesn't save you too many seconds, but it's much more entertaining than sitting in an attic waiting for the timer. Not to mention that it's pretty cool.
