In this video, we will discuss subnetting in detail by taking some real-life examples, Lets’ have a look -
Question 1: You need to subnet a network that has 5 subnets, each with at least 16 hosts. Which classful subnet mask would you see?
Options:
255.255.255.192
255.255.255.224
255.255.255.240
255.255.255.248
Solution:
For 16 hosts, we need 4 bits but, we need 16 usable IPs.
So, I need 5 bits,
Host Bits = 5
Network Bits = 27
So,
27+5 = /32
Hence, we have here /27 which means in the last octet I have 3 bits ON, and on the first 3 octets, we have 24 bits which say the correct answer is 255.255.255.224.
Answer: 1) 255.255.255.224
Question 2: On a VLSM network, which mask should you use on point-to-point WAN links in order to reduce the waste of IP addresses?

/27
/28
/29
/30
Solution:
When we say it is a WAN link or I say it is a point-to-point link it means we need,
2 Usable IPs + 1 Network ID + 1 Broadcast ID
So,
The subnet mask of the smallest network that we will have is /30. In /30 network we will get 2 host bits,
Total number of Host = 22
= 4 (There will be two usable IPs, one will be Network ID & one will be Broadcast ID)
Answer: 2) /30
