The productivity suite software has two different instructions for scaling analog values.
In our example of a tank, we will use Scale Linear to find the height of the liquid in the tank.
Our 13-bit resolution is 1FFF hexadecimal which equals 8191 decimal. The input signal is 4 to 20 ma, so our raw input will be 1638 to 8191.
This will represent 0 to 200 inches in our tank.
Calculating the volume will not be a straight line. We will use the non-linear scale instruction to calculate the tank gallons based on the signal height.
You can scale your non-linear output with up to 16 break points. As the analog signal is changed, the corresponding result is displayed.
In this example, we are using resistors to create the 4-20ma input signal to the PLC. Here is a video showing how this was done.
