Does Article 5 no longer protect Türkiye?
Israel's calls to expel Turkey from NATO are actually an expression of discontent with Turkey's independent defense policies. Despite NATO's Article 5, Turkey is cautious about the alliance due to its past experiences with the Johnson Letter, the Cyprus embargo, CAATSA sanctions, and the F-35 crisis. However, leaving NATO would pave the way for countries like Israel and Southern Cyprus to join the alliance and weaken Turkey's deterrent.
Today, while Turkey exploits NATO's strategic advantages, it is simultaneously establishing its own independent security axis with domestic defense projects such as KAAN, TCG Anadolu, and HİSAR. In other words, Turkey is no longer tying its fate to NATO, but rather using NATO as a tool for its own interests.
