Plants vs. Zombies is a 2D tower defense video game developed and published by PopCap Games for Windows and Mac OS X in 2009. It was the first in the Plants vs. Zombies series. The game went on sale on May 5, 2009, and became available on Steam the same day. A simplified version of the game for iPhone and iPod touch of all generations was also released on February 14, 2010. Development of an Xbox 360 version was announced at Casual Connect in July 2009. On April 1, 2010, a version of Plants vs. Zombies HD was released for iPad, including an additional minigame, "Buttery Popcorn." A version for Windows Phone 7 was released on June 22, 2011.
Plants protect the house from zombies hungry for the owner's brains. Plants are divided into vegetables, berries, mushrooms, water plants, technical plants (such as thorns), and very rare plants that can only be purchased in stores. Plants are also divided into defensive and offensive plants, aquatic and terrestrial, diurnal and nocturnal, and normal and special. Using the plant's abilities and their relative positions leads to victory in zombie battles. Growing plants requires the game's main resource, "sun," which falls from the sky and is produced by special plants.
