Most Secured Building: The Arctic’s Global Seed Vault
What would happen if a disaster of apocalyptic proportions struck the Earth? Or if nuclear war wiped out half of humanity? Whoever is left would likely die of starvation due to the loss of important plant life and biodiversity. This is the reason why a group of scientists decided to stockpile a wide variety of seeds in an impregnable fortress in the Arctic called the Global Seed vault. Their goal is to provide humanity with the valuable resources needed to grow back our food supply if something major were to happen to our planet. So today, let’s take a look at what exactly the Global Seed Vault is and what it means for our survival as a species.
The Global Seed Vault is Earth’s backup plan
So do we really need to store all these different types of seeds? If so, why? There are 1,700 of these seed banks worldwide. Each of these store collections of food crops for safekeeping, but they aren’t as safe as we’d like to think. These banks are highly vulnerable to catastrophes, war, climate change, lack of funding, and mismanagement. Even a slight change or malfunction in a freezer vault could result in thousands of seeds being no longer viable. Furthermore, plant species are just as vulnerable to extinction as the dinosaurs; a major crop like wheat, barley, or oats could be wiped off the face of the Earth if conditions were severe enough.
