The game takes place in November 1974 in Latin America, 10 years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and four years after Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. In the Republic of Costa Rica, a secret army is being created amidst deep secrecy—a mysterious armed force with cutting-edge weaponry; the army is called the Peace Sentinels. The country's government, which abandoned its own army back in 1949, is unable to prevent the invasion, but is also unable to appeal to its more powerful neighbors. The presence of the PS upsets the balance of power between East and West. So the Costa Rican government secretly hires Naked Snake and his armed group to quietly deal with the invasion.
