This morning, a ceremonial flower-laying ceremony was held at the Glory Memorial in Lesopark, and at Svobody Square, the President of Ukraine congratulated Kharkiv residents on the 70th anniversary of Kharkiv's liberation from the Nazi invaders.
Viktor Yanukovych arrived in the First Capital specifically to personally congratulate and thank the veterans.
"The foundation for Kharkiv's development was laid by our veterans and people who dedicated their youth to the city's post-war reconstruction. We have taken decisive steps to significantly improve the standard of living of war veterans. Pensions for the families of deceased disabled veterans have increased by more than 700 hryvnias. Since 2010, a program to provide apartments to disabled veterans of the Great Patriotic War was implemented for the first time, thanks to which more than 700 families have improved their housing conditions," said Viktor Yanukovych.
"After the war, Kharkiv residents rebuilt their city from the ruins. "Kharkiv has become one of the most beautiful cities in Ukraine and retains its reputation as one of Ukraine's capitals," the President emphasized.
Viktor Fedorovich also noted that any war is a direct denial of God's commandments. In his speech, he honored veterans and expressed gratitude for the peaceful skies.
Following the President's speech, dance groups performed in the square, and an orchestra parade began. Orchestras from England, Moldova, Russia, and Turkey arrived in Kharkiv. A Ukrainian orchestra and six Kharkiv orchestras also took part in the parade. A total of 16 orchestras performed in the square.
Elena Pushkina, a veteran of the Great Patriotic War, shared her memories of the war with Robinzon TV.
"This is a significant date for me. I volunteered for the front from Kharkiv in August 1941 and reached Berlin by 1945. In January 1943, I was assigned to the 112th Division. It marched from Stalingrad to Berlin. "The conditions were terrible. We didn't even know what a bed was, except for the dugouts. We were starving and risking our lives," recalls Elena Pushkina.
"It's an honor. This is our legacy, which our children and grandchildren haven't forgotten," says war veteran Vladimir Serbsky about Kharkiv's liberation celebration. "It's a great joy for us."
In the evening, Kharkiv residents will enjoy a festive concert featuring the bands Okean Elzy, Diskoteka Avaria, TIK, and Gradusy, as well as a celebratory fireworks display.
