A typical failure of the rear differential with a 4.8L engine is 90% a broken differential housing (satellite housing). This type of differential can only be sold as scrap metal.
A differential with a 4.44 ratio has been driven for 220,000 km without an oil change.
The main cause of failure is not changing the oil. If there's no drain plug, the oil doesn't need to be changed – that's a myth. 60,000 km is a definite replacement.
Another reason is the contact patch width of 20- and 21-inch wheels – the width of the tire (315 mm), compared to 255 mm for standard 18- and 19-inch wheels.
