Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi was born on September 30, 1207 in the city of Belh in Khorasan, which is within the borders of Afghanistan today. He took the surname Rumi because Anatolia was called the Land of Rum during his lifetime, and in time, he took the name Mevlana, which means our master, as an expression of the great respect for him.
He is the son of Bahaeddin Veled, a religious scholar and jurist known as Sultan-ül Ulema (Sultan of Scholars), who taught in the city of Belh, one of the cultural centers of the period.
