Oymyakon is a small village located in Russia’s Siberian region, within the borders of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Comprising around 225 households, it is known as the coldest permanently inhabited place on Earth. With a temperature of -71.2°C recorded in 1924, it holds the world record for the lowest officially registered temperature in a populated area.

During the winter months, the temperature difference between the inside and outside of homes can reach nearly 100 degrees Celsius. Despite these harsh conditions, approximately 800 people continue to live in the village.

Residents adapt to the climate by living in well-insulated homes. Their livelihoods depend on nature: some fish in ice-covered rivers, while others survive by hunting in the surrounding taiga forests.

The extreme cold affects every aspect of daily life, yet the people of Oymyakon have developed resilience to endure and thrive in this unforgiving environment.
