How Stalin Apologized to Rokossovsky
As is well known, Konstantin Rokossovsky was arrested in August 1937 on a false denunciation. He was accused of ties to foreign intelligence services. Rokossovsky's imprisonment lasted over two years, during which he was subjected to torture and severe beatings. Konstantin Konstantinovich denied his guilt. Due to a lack of evidence of treason, Rokossovsky was released from custody in March 1940 and rehabilitated. On December 21, 1943, Konstantin Rokossovsky was invited to the Kremlin for Stalin's birthday, as he shared his birthday. In the midst of the banquet, Stalin took Rokossovsky aside and apologized for his 1937 arrest. Stalin said, "We deeply offended you—it happens—sorry!" After which Stalin and Rokossovsky returned to the table together, and Stalin proposed a toast to Rokossovsky's honor.
