How to use Splice loops, samples, and RC-20 Retro Color to create cool drum beats in Ableton Live
Hey! In this video I pulled up an old session file to demonstrate some drum production techniques I use to create congealed and vibey sounding drums. I 100% always prefer making beats from scratch, but sometimes I'll browse through loops just to get some ideas going, especially when the artist is in the session.
The first technique I used is layering in some kick and snare samples on top of the loop. So you get the groove of the loop but you beef up the kicks and snares sonically, without over processing the loop. If you peep the sample triggers too I actually didn't even need to add any processing to them. The next step is to get it all glued together and RC-20 Retro Color is perfect for that. I walk you through my settings.
