BITE (Built in test equipment) is common feature in all digital electronic systems used on aircraft. It can be in to an individual LRU or it can be a part of a aircraft CMS system. If part of a system, the system likely contains several individual BITE electronic units used to handle the testing of the numerous LRU's onboard the aircraft. Signals are sent and received by the BITE to determine if there are any faults, to isolate the faults, and to verify correct operating parameters, especially after repair or replacement of an LRU.

Many systems and components have their own BITE (Built in test equipment) dedicated to servicing just that particular system or unit. Some of those are listed below:
-- ADC Air Data Computer
-- ATC Transponder
-- ADF Automatic Direction Finder
-- DME Distance Measuring Equipment
-- EFIS Electronic Flight Instruments
-- EICAS Engine Indicating and Crew Alerting Systemt
-- Flight Management Computer
-- HF Communications Radios
-- Hydraulic Management
-- INS Inertial Reference System
-- ILS Instrument Landing System
-- PA Passenger Address System
-- VHF Communication Radios
-- Weather Radar
