The First Earth Day . . . and Still Counting
The First Earth Day . . . and Still Counting tells the story of my fifth-grade class's celebration of the first Earth Day in 1970. Our teacher, Mr. Osborn, inspired us to engage with this monumental event by planting a garden outside our classroom. Being a part of the early Earth Day movement was one of the roots of my ecological activism and I continue to mark Earth Day each year by planting an apple tree in memory of Mr. Osborn at Stonebridge Farm, our organic CSA in Colorado. Yet planting trees will not be enough to stop the environmental devastation upon us. This video explores that hopeful time of dawning ecological consciousness and questions whether Earth Day's legacy can make a difference in the mounting crisis of our only earth.
