"The Romantic's Lament"
By: Robin Lin Ryding
Hopeless romantic
A feeling so frantic
Magnets run rampant beneath my skin
I long to be wanted
Avoid being haunted
Still taunted by decadence misplaced between ordinary tongues
What could be has not been
And if your love I cannot win, familiar shadows will descend
This lurid poison cloaked in lust, I’ll surely drink it, if I must
Drown my sorrows in the bottles marked by my most mortal sins
A warning label held by glue from long lost loves I once pursued
Their forewarned heartbreak I consumed has blinded me from seeking truth
My every gulp feeds this disease
Of admiration met with ease but as I guzzle,
As I suckle,
From the breast of ideation, the temptation of each immoral drop does not allow me time to stop Imaginary love’s sweet liquid flooding down to line my lungs
False whispers paint the pictures of a passionate affair
Of what I wish I could find there behind the curtains I once drew
Two arms
Their grip wrapped tight as ribbons ‘round my waist
A gentle kiss
From lips I’ve just begun to taste
But such fanciful fantasies hold no place on solid ground
Forged from fiction I forget that colors delicately swept across this canvas of my lids is but a masterpiece of lines
A sketch as vivid as the lies I’ve dared to dream
Despite how real to me they seem…
Alas, I wake another day
Perhaps, that is one way to say,
Love is a mistake I’ll gladly pay
