In the Soviet Union 1940s-50s, when music was subject to a censor and the recording industry was completely controlled by the State, music-mad bootleggers discovered an extraordinary alternative means of reproduction: they repurpose used x-ray film as the base for making records of forbidden songs. X-Ray Audio, a project by Stephen Coates, presents the story of Soviet Music on “bones”.
Recording “on the bones” was recreated in the modern concert environment.
