Mazda 3. Dodge Maneuver

With the Mazda 3, we obtained modest speed results in the dodge maneuver, although the reactions were always safe and predictable. On the first attempt, at 77 km/h (48 mph), we noticed obvious understeer after the second steering input. Although the driver executed the maneuver well, he decided at the last moment not to enter the third lane of cones, as the car opened up its trajectory significantly in the second section.

The highest entry speed in a successful attempt was 76 km/h (47 mph). On this occasion, the driver already had a good grasp of the car's reactions. Thanks to a second, more aggressive steering input, he managed to get it to oversteer very slightly, allowing the rear axle to slightly round out its trajectory.

Although the Mazda 3 isn't particularly agile in this maneuver, its handling feels very precise. The steering provides a wealth of information about the tires' grip, and the body lands on the brakes with a single, precise movement, without any bouncing or other unexpected movements. The electronic aids work subtly.

At 77 km/h, we made an almost identical pass, although we didn't quite qualify as it had slightly displaced a cone. At 80 km/h, a high speed, the reactions seemed equally easy to control. The trajectory didn't noticeably deteriorate, although understeer prevented us from negotiating the third lane of cones cleanly.

Slalom

The Mazda 3's performance in the slalom is excellent. Although the body rolls slightly, changes in steering direction occur quickly. The steering feel is precise, and the electronic aids intervene effectively, without the driver being able to clearly appreciate their operation.
