Fate/Extella seems like a hard series to get into, and it kind of is. Still, I think this game is pretty good and is self-contained. Although knowledge from other series would probably help you understand the lore of the game better, I don't think it's necessary. It is pretty crazy though, people say that this series is a spinoff of a spinoff from Kamen Rider, which is a very old manga and TV series. I might have to ask my uncle about this one, he was a fan of the oldest animes to come out, like the first Gundam's.
The gameplay is really fun, but my main criticism is that there should be more gameplay. Don't get me wrong, I liked the visual-novel scenes the game has, but I wish that it was broken down a bit better, like having maybe a 10 minute cutscene, and then a stage of gameplay. As it is now, sometimes you'll get maybe 1.5 to 2 hour cutscenes, with only a single gameplay stage in-between to break it up. The lengthiness of the game is really caused by the long visual novel scenes.
That said, I don't hate them, it builds up the characters and the paths well, and by the time you beat the fourth character path, you will feel sad that you have to let the characters go. The banter between the characters is really funny at times. The musuo gameplay feels fun, too. I remember back when technical limitations were strict - here, you can actually defeat hundreds of enemies all at once! Great game, definitely worth a playthrough.
