The opening of a second front in Western Europe during World War II was one of the most important events that determined the outcome of the war. After years of intense fighting on the Eastern Front, where the Soviet Union bore the brunt of the German onslaught, Stalin increasingly pressured the Western Allies to open a new front that would break German dominance in Europe and relieve the Red Army. In response to these pressures, plans for Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy, began to take shape.
The invasion, which began on June 6, 1944, known as D-Day, was an unprecedented military undertaking. Preparations for it lasted many months and included not only the massing of massive land, air, and naval forces but also a complex disinformation operation known as Operation Fortitude. The aim of this operation was to convince the Germans that the invasion would take place in the Pas-de-Calais region rather than in Normandy, thus distracting German forces from the actual landing site.
The invasion itself was one of the most complex logistical and military undertakings in history. Over 156,000 Allied troops, primarily from Great Britain, the United States, and Canada, as well as Poles who fought as part of General Maczek's 1st Armored Division, participated. Supported by thousands of aircraft and ships, Allied forces breached the German defenses on the so-called Atlantic Wall, which were intended to prevent the invasion.
Despite initial difficulties, including heavy fighting on Omaha and Utah Beaches, Allied forces managed to establish a foothold in Normandy and begin the liberation of France. The Battle of Normandy was exceptionally bloody and lasted several weeks.
