For decades, scientists told us a supermassive black hole called Sagittarius A* sits at the center of our galaxy — four million times the mass of the Sun. But a growing number of physicists are now questioning whether it's a black hole at all. New theoretical models propose alternatives — from gravastars to dark matter cores to boson stars — that could explain the same observations without requiring a singularity. The Nobel Prize was awarded for it. The Event Horizon Telescope photographed it. And some researchers say we still can't prove what it actually is.
