10 Terrifying Creatures of the Amazon River

The Amazon rainforest is a magnificent ecosystem that provides a habitat for creatures as strange and wonderful as the jaguar, the poison dart frog, and the Jesus lizard. It's home to more than just animals that slither, swing, and slide in the trees. The creatures that live in the depths of the Amazon River, the world's largest river, are so amazing and terrifying that many of the most feared animals
look cute next to them. In this video, we have compiled 10 creatures that live in the deep waters of the Amazon River for you. Enjoy watching.

10-Black Caiman

Black Caimans can grow up to six meters long with larger, heavier skulls than Nile crocodiles and are one of the most powerful predators in the Amazon waters. This means that they are the kings of the river.

They eat almost anything they can get their teeth into, including piranhas, monkeys, bass, deer and anacondas. And yes, they definitely attack people too. In 2010, a biologist named Deise Nishimura was attacked by a caiman while cleaning fish on his boat. This particular caiman had been living under his houseboat for eight months and was obviously waiting for the chance to hunt.

9-Green Anaconda

These giant reptiles make their home in the Amazon. Females, which are usually larger than males, can weigh 250 kilograms, measure nine meters in length and measure 30 centimeters in diameter. They are not venomous, instead they use their enormous muscular strength to constrict and suffocate their prey, including capybaras, deer, caimans and even jaguars.

They prefer shallower waters that allow them to sneak up on their prey.

8-Arapaima

Arapaima, also known as pirarucu or paiche, are huge carnivorous fish that live in the Amazon and surrounding lakes. Surrounded by armored scales, they think nothing of living in piranha-infested waters. They are highly effective hunters, feeding on fish and occasionally birds.

Arapaima tend to stay close to the surface because they need to breathe surface air in addition to taking in oxygen through their gills, and they make a distinctive coughing sound when they emerge for air. They can reach lengths of 2.7 meters and weigh up to 90 kilograms. These fish are so cruel that even their tongues have teeth.

7-Giant otters

They are the longest specimens of the weasel family, with adult males measuring two meters from head to tail. Their diet mainly includes fish and crabs. They can eat up to four kilograms of seafood per day. Don't be fooled by their cute appearance, groups of giant otters have been seen killing and eating an anaconda. One family was seen eating a 1.5-meter caiman, and it took them about 45 minutes. They are among the most skilled hunters in the Amazon rainforest, hence their local name, "river wolves."

6-Candiru

The Amazon doesn't just raise giants. The smaller creatures are just as scary, at least if you believe the stories surrounding them. Candiru are small, parasitic, freshwater catfish. What makes this fish scary is that it shoots out at people who urinate in the river and because of the spines on its back..

5-Bull Sharks
4-Electric Eels
3-Red-Bellied Piranhas
2-Vampire Fish
