Dispelling the darkness...

Ori and the Blind Forest is a platformer video game developed by Moon Studios and published by Microsoft Studios for the Windows and Xbox One platforms. The game is built using the Unity game engine. It was released for Windows and Xbox One on March 11, 2015.

The game is a completely 2D platformer. The player controls a character named Ori (a white, mythical creature, a cross between a fox, a squirrel, and a wildcat) and his protective spirit, Sein, a bundle of energy that swirls around Ori. Sein attacks enemies by firing bolts of Spirit Flame (by pressing the left mouse button, the "X" key on the keyboard, or a gamepad button). Sein can also unleash a powerful burst of energy (which costs a resource) that damages all enemies near Ori and destroys certain objects. Ori himself initially only knows how to jump, but as the game progresses, he will learn to climb walls, dive underwater, glide, double- and triple-jump, and use energy to project himself or push enemies and objects.

The game map, which represents various sections of the forest, loads in its entirety, and the player is free to go wherever they want. However, without unlocking the ability specific to a given section of the forest, they will be unable to access it.

Initially, the player is thrown into the game world without any explanation of what to do, and must find a solution through trial and error. After finding Sein, the player will receive hints from him.

Ori has a health meter and an energy meter, represented by slots. Initially, Ori is very weak, with only three health slots and one energy slot. As the player explores the world, they will discover additional slots for these metering indicators. Additionally, by killing enemies and finding skill points, Ori's abilities can be upgraded.

The player can save at any point in the game, which is also part of the gameplay experience, as checkpoints are spaced very far apart on the map, and after a death, they must restart from the last saved point. Saving the game consumes an energy cell, forcing the player to be selective early in the game. Toward the end of the game, when there are typically more cells, saving is no longer a problem.

Ori and the Blind Forest was developed over four years by Moon Studios[2][3]. One of the lead developers, Thomas Mahler, formerly worked at Blizzard Entertainment[4]. According to Microsoft producer Daniel Smith, Moon Studios isn't headquartered in any one location: developers are located around the world, including Austria, Australia, Israel, the United States, and other countries[5]. Programmer David Clarke stated that Ori and the Blind Forest is a tribute to classic adventure games like Rayman and Metroid.

When writing the story, the developers drew inspiration from works such as The Lion King and The Iron Giant[6]: in particular, the scene in which Naru dies and Ori mourns her mimics Mufasa's death in key moments, while Kuro's self-sacrifice echoes the final scene in The Iron Giant. The game itself is built using the Unity game engine. The game takes place on a single large map with no visible loading of parts of the game world, requiring a significant loading time before playing. According to the developers, not a single background element is duplicated.

The game was first unveiled at E3 2014 during a presentation at the Galen Center; incidentally, E3 was the event where all the developers met face-to-face for the first time. During E3, attendees formed long lines to try out the demo.

After E3, Moon Studios announced the Xbox version of the game would be released in early 2015[7]. In November 2014, Moon Studios announced plans to delay the release for all planned platforms, without mentioning the Xbox 360 platform[8]. They later stated that the game would be released for that platform soon.
